Q. What should I do if I am arrested by the Police?

A. Immediately contact Hewitts Solicitors who are available for free representations at Police Stations 365 days per year, 24 hours per day. We will advise you on the charges you face and arrange personal attendance within 45 minutes of the call.


Q. How much will I have to pay if I need representation at the Police Station?

A. Advice and Representation at Police Stations is free.


Q. If a matter proceeds to Court what do I do?

A. We have one of the largest criminal teams in the South Durham area who will prepare your case and represent you in the Magistrates Court and assess whether you are eligible for Public Funding. Public Funding is not Means Tested at the present time.


Q. Is my case too minor for Legal Representation?

A. No, Hewitts Solicitors will advise and represent you and prides itself on dedication to any and every case. We act in cases from murder, burglary and assault to speeding and public order matters.


Q. Can Hewitts Solicitors advise me on Customs Investigations?

A. Yes, we have a specialists team who will deal with any problems you have with customs, advise and represent you in any further proceedings.


Q. What sentence might I expect?

A. Hewitts Solicitors will advise you on the likely sentence that you may receive in the Courts.


Q. I wish to appeal against my sentence/conviction?

A. Hewitts Solicitors can advise you on the necessary applications to appeal sentence/convictions.

Q. Can I have representation for my child?

A. Yes, Hewitts Solicitors specialise in youth work in the Youth Courts. This area is more complex and with a wider range of sentencing options and Hewitts Solicitors can advise and represent on each step of the proceedings.


Q. Which Courts can Hewitts Solicitors represent me in?

A. All Courts in the North East region and if you face charges in a Court outside the area we can take your full instructions, provide a personal service and arrange an Agent to represent you at the Court in which you face charges. In some cases we can even arrange the case to be transferred to a more local Court.


Q. Do Hewitts Solicitors represent cases in the Crown Court?

A. Yes, in some cases we have Rights of Audience. In other matters we would deal with your case on a day to day basis and arrange suitable representation by an experienced Barrister in the Court room.


Q. Am I guilty of the offences for which I am charged?

A. A person may have committed an offence but still have a lawful defence to that charge. Our Solicitors can identify available defences and advise accordingly.
